Creating Precise Functional Impressions for Removable Dentures Functional dental impressions are an essential part of the process of making removable dentures. They are created by the dental lab technician in order to create a wax and impression model that is sent to the dental lab for fabrication. Functional impressions allow dentists to accurately determine how a patient’s teeth will fit into a space, which can then be adjusted during the design process before fabrication. The process of creating functional impressions can be quite time-consuming, and it's one of the most important steps in the entire removable denture design process because it allows for accurate measurements and adjustments before production begins. Custom impression trays for functional impressions Custom trays are becoming a popular solution for making removable dentures more accessible and affordable. This is because it doesn’t require the dentist to purchase expensive materials or tools that aren’t necessary for the treatment process. It also creates a customized solution that is designed specifically for each patient’s mouth and teeth. Custom-made impression trays are made of a moldable material that is used by dentists as an impression material. It is made up of a resin-based material that has a high thermal resistance and shows excellent characteristics over the long term. The custom dental impression trays are mostly used by dentists when they need to create a working model of their patient's teeth in order to plan for any needed procedures and treatments such as cavity repair or root canal therapy. Using thermoplastic material to create custom impression trays Thermoplastic material does not require any special machinery to use, which makes it easier for dental offices with limited resources. The ease of use and low cost make it an appealing option for many dental office owners. Thermoplastic is a material that can be molded into any shape. This is due to the material's quick set time of less than two minutes, which allows for efficiency in completing the process quickly. If you're looking to make a mold for your product, thermoplastic has many benefits over other materials such as silicone and polyurethane. Using EasyTray to create custom impression trays in less than a minute EasyTray is a unique thermoplastic material for creating custom rigid dental trays quickly, accurately, and efficiently - and saves you the hassle of creating dental custom impression trays from scratch. To create custom dental trays with EasyTray, all you need to do is soften it in hot water (above 170 degrees Celsius) for about 30 seconds. Once it’s soft, just mold it directly inside the patient’s mouth with the help of a disposable fluoride tray as a spacer. After that, simply soak it in cold water for about 30 seconds, remove the spacer, and you’re done! You now have a custom impression tray in just under a minute. The process of making impressions can be a time-consuming process, especially if you work with multiple patients every day and need to create casts for each one of them. With EasyTray, you are able to quickly make impressions in your own home or clinic without wasting any material - plus save yourself valuable time in the process. Where can I find EasyTray? Dr. Shillingburg at the Oklahoma School of Dentistry published that custom trays use 12-14 mls of material for a full arch impression. Stock trays use 40-44 mls per full arch impression. We will use .48 cents per ml of impression material in our cost comparison. Full arch impressions using the Easy Tray made in the mouth in a minute custom tray cost about $12. This includes the cost of an opposing arch impression in alginate and the cost of a disposable fluoride tray. Full arch impressions taken with custom trays made with acrylic or light cure materials cost between $85 and $115. With this method you must first make a stone model and then pay some labor to have the tray made. Acrylic will get you 10-12 full arch trays per pound of material if you have no mistakes or waste. Cost about $5 per tray. Light cure will cost about the same and both require much time. Full arch impressions made with a stock plastic tray will cost about $25. All these include the cost of light body and a syringe. A typical dual arch tray uses 18-24 mls per quadrant. These will cost about $12 per quadrant. Labs would rather have full arch impressions for most crown and bridge. The dentist will have easier seat appointments since less time is spent in adjusting occlusion and lateral movements. As for bite registration, take a small piece of the softened Easy Tray, place it where you want it and have the patient close. Blow a little air on it and in 10-15 seconds you will have a bite that is firm and can do from one tooth to a full arch. Cost here is .10 cents to 30 cents. Sure better than a bite registration material costing $6-$9. A typical dental office doing 225 impressions will save around $2500 in material costs.
