- A personal list - of Cape favorites Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, MA) - May 11, 2006 Author: SOLON ECONOMOU When I crossed the bridge to Cape Cod in 1998 as a ''washashore,'' I found many things had changed since I vacationed here as a youth. In fact, the entire landscape had changed. Where is the road that ran along the bluffs on the Atlantic side of the Lower Cape and gave visitors some of the best scenery? It seems most of it is gone or broken up by private dwellings or the National Seashore. Some change is good, and some change isn't. What is this unsightliness called the Mid-Cape Highway? That road is my least favorite part of the Cape, and I avoid traveling it whenever possible. Parts of the New Jersey Turnpike are more scenic. Who moved Nauset Light? Who moved Highland Light? I questioned my own sanity when I walked up the winter beach from the south and gazed at the empty bluff where I swore Nauset Light once stood. Climbing the bluff restored my sanity as I saw the lighthouse nearby and the obvious location from which it had been moved. And, no, dear readers, I am not so old as to ask: Where are the Marconi towers?! Now that I've lived here for a while and have wandered and gotten out and about, I have arrived at a few favorite things and places I'd like to share with you. Favorite Restaurant: The Yarmouth House Restaurant in South Yarmouth. It, too, is open year-round and offers a superb menu, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere in a casually elegant setting.
