Mission
New York City's leading Catholic university, St. John's prepares students for success as leaders in today's global society. St. John's is known across the country and around the world for combining quality academics, outstanding professors, confidence-building service activities and dynamic study abroad programs. Following the example of St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th-century priest and pioneer in the effort to serve those in need, the University encourages students to have a positive impact on the world even before they graduate. Students come from 46 states and 111 countries to pursue more than 100 programs in the arts, the sciences, business, education, pharmacy and the allied health professions. Along with our three residential New York City campuses in Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan, and one in Oakdale, NY, St. John's has campuses in Rome, Italy, and Paris, France. The locations of our campuses add vitality to the St. John's experience. Through Discover New York, a freshman core course, students meet for class at Central Park, Ellis Island, Wall Street and other historic locations. St. John's dynamic Global Studies offerings take full advantage of the University's Rome and Paris campuses along with other locations around the world. For example, our Freshman Passport Program allows new students to spend two weeks studying at our Rome campus in their first semester. In addition to semester, winter and summer courses, students can enroll in Discover the World, earning 15 credits living and learning in three European cities in a single semester. Through Campus Ministry and Student Life, students also serve at soup kitchens, donate time to nonprofit organizations and participate in winter and spring plunges that assist the needy in New Orleans, Europe and Central America. Using knowledge and action to have a positive impact on the world is an important part of St. John's mission. Another way St. John's combines academics with service is the Ozanam Scholars. Undergraduates admitted to this program receive a $10,000 annual scholarship and work closely with professors and community leaders to address issues of poverty and injustice. Students also benefit from a rich variety of residence life and campus activities, including 180 student clubs and organizations and the thrill of cheering for St. John's Division I, BIG EAST men's and women's athletics teams.
