Williamsburg Northside's Elementary School is a K-5 program located in the vibrant Brooklyn Neighborhood of Williamsburg. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, they are committed to offering a school age experience that views each and every child as a strong, capable and powerful individual who is an active participant in their learning. Each child comes to the learning environment with thoughts, ideas and questions on which to build upon and develop. They strive to create a community in which all children feel safe, secure and supported to share, explore, question, falter when necessary, think critically and create. Reggio Emilia educators at Williamsburg Northside School share the belief that children have many methods of communicating, including storytelling, music, art, movement, dramatic play and construction. All of these methods of communication are respected and encouraged in the schools by providing children with a variety of interesting and open-ended experiences and materials, including natural and recycled objects. When children represent their ideas with a variety of different medium, they reinforce new knowledge, allow for the formation of new questions and predictions, learn to elaborate on their ideas and strengthen their ability to communicate with others. Their students' day begins at 8:30 and finishes at 3:00. Throughout the week children are engaged in a variety of enrichment classes including, but not limited to Studio Art, Library, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Spanish in compliment to the explorations in the classroom. They host an after school program to meet the needs of our families as well. Williamsburg Northside School is growing enthusiastically, but also slowly and mindfully by adding only one class per year.
