- In the 140 years since its founding, Virginia Union University has been teaching, strengthening its academic programs, and growing into a highly respected private, liberal arts institution. The University, founded to provide quality education for African Americans, is the result of the "union" of two institutions: Wayland Seminary and Richmond Theological Institute, established by the American Baptist Home Mission Society; and Hartshorn Memorial College of Richmond and Storer College of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Virginia Union University, nourished by the African American heritage and energized by a commitment to excellence, provides a nurturing, intellectually challenging, and spiritually enriching environment.
