- Mission
- One of the few master's level public regional universities in the nation with a Rhodes scholar, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire prepares its students to compete with students from institutions throughout the nation for prestigious awards, top graduate schools and desirable jobs. In recent years, UW-Eau Claire has had more students receive Fulbright grants than most master's level schools in the country. It's the only Wisconsin school on the current list of top Fulbright producers in its category. Several faculty also are recent Fulbright winners. We are a leader among comprehensive universities in the number of chemistry graduates earning Ph.Ds We graduate more physics and chemistry majors than most colleges in the nation, according to the American Institute of Physics and the American Chemical Society. A senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology was named a 2010 Truman Scholar by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Just 60 students in the nation received the Truman awards, which provide up to $30,000 for graduate study. We're one of four undergraduate institutions in the nation to have four or more Dreyfus teacher-scholar winners on its faculty. Several science and math faculty have received large grant awards from the National Science Foundation, and history and education faculty have secured US Department of Education grants. Our nationally recognized undergraduate student-faculty research program provides research opportunities often available only to graduate students at large schools. Hundreds of students in many disciplines conduct research with faculty. Research often is published in prestigious journals, such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Undergraduate students sometimes are lead authors on the published articles. Our music program features faculty and students who perform worldwide, with venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican. Jazz Ensemble I again won a Down Beat Award for Best College Jazz Enssemble. The award is the highest possible award a college jazz program can attain. This is the sixth time the ensemble has won the prestigious national award. We offer many programs that allow students to study, live and work in international settings, as well as programs that bring international students here. We send more students abroad than any other master's level institution in Wisconsin. Almost 25 percent of our students study abroad in more than 30 countries. A growing number of education students complete their student teaching in international settings. An increasing number of students earn scholarships through competitive programs to study and conduct research abroad. More students are completing internships in international settings. Students also are having meaningful experiences at sites within the United States, with activities ranging from civil rights pilgrimages to the south to volunteer work in tribal schools in northern Wisconsin to research in western mountain ranges. UW-Eau Claire is the only public university in north western and north central Wisconsin that offers a baccalaureate nursing degree. The program graduates more than 100 students a year. The university is one of just a handful of public regional universities in the nation-the only one in Wisconsin-to include service-learning as a graduation requirement. Each year our students provide nearly 470,000 hours in community service. UW-Eau Claire was again named in the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service. We're the only Wisconsin school named to the Honor Roll with distinction all four years it has existed. UW-Eau Claire is a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Our athletics department is ranked 13th best in the nation out of 420 schools, based on the number of teams advancing to the NCAA tournament.
