- A Jesuit and Catholic institution in Pennsylvania's Pocono northeast region, The University of Scranton is known for its personal approach to education, one in which individuals are respected and cherished for their unique talents, aspirations and vocations. Founded in 1888, Scranton offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate academic programs of study through four colleges and schools. Scranton offers a full range of undergraduate programs of study to match your interests and prepare you to meet the future with confidence. The newest additions to the University's 59 undergraduate majors include forensic chemistry, community health education, business administration, and biochemistry, cell and molecular biology. Scranton also offers 43 minors, 30 concentrations and tracks, 23 master's degree programs and a doctor of physical therapy program. Each year Scranton selects between 50 and 60 of the most qualified freshmen to join the Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Program (SJLA), a program that allows them to fulfill their general education credits in a community atmosphere encouraging excellence and service to others. Open to all majors, the Honors Program each year accepts between 40 and 50 of our most able sophomores, giving them the opportunity to take seminars together and to work one-on-one with professors both in tutorials and on projects. Open to students from all majors, our Business Leadership Program allows students to explore basic theories and concepts of leadership through special seminars and courses in management, ethics, strategy, and analysis. This highly selective program accepts 15 sophomores each spring. In the last six years alone, Scranton has invested more than $150 million in new facilities. These new facilities include the a 118,000 sq. ft. campus center, a 386-bed sophomore residence hall, and football field-sized campus green. A 200,000 sq. ft. unified science center is under construction and scheduled to open in the fall of 2011. Of the 389 senior applicants to health professions schools over the last nine years, an average of 81% were accepted. Over the past six years, nearly 300 graduates have received acceptance into law schools from over 70 schools, including some of the nation's most prestigious. Since 1972, Scranton students have received 124 Fulbrights and other prestigious international fellowships. Scranton was listed among the 'top producers' of Fulbright awards for American students by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Just 81 schools in the nation were listed in four categories based on their institution type and size. In the past seven years alone, students earned four Truman scholarships, seven Goldwater Scholarships, and two Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarships and an Undergraduate Scholarship. Five students were also named to USA Today's All-USA Academic Team. Students are supported by the Office of Fellowship Programs. For 16 consecutive years, US News & World Report has ranked Scranton among the 10 finest master's universities in the North. In the 2010 edition of "America's Best Colleges," the University was named among the nation's 77 'up and coming' schools. For the past eight years, The Princeton Review has included Scranton among its "371 Best Colleges." The University of Scranton is among just 119 colleges in the nation earning the highly selective 2008 Community Engagement Classification designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Scranton was among just 50 elite schools in the nation and just four in Pennsylvania to be included in Kiplinger's "Best Values in Private Colleges" list, which measures academic quality and affordability. Scranton was also among 247 colleges in the nation included in Barron's "Best Buys in College Education."
