- For 2009-2010 Pitt-Bradford reached its longstanding enrollment goal of 1,500 FTE three years in advance of the projected time frame with an FTE this fall of 1,535. Pitt-Bradford also shattered its prior enrollment goals by recording its highest total student enrollment of 1,657, a 9.6 percent increase over last year; and largest freshman class at 418, an 11 percent increase over last year???s class. Students in the Fall 2009 freshman class came from 13 states, Washington, DC, Japan, Korea and Canada The freshman-to-sophomore retention rate surpassed 73 percent for the first time in Pitt-Bradford???s history. For the sixth consecutive year, The Princeton Review recognized Pitt-Bradford as one of the best schools in the Northeast. Pitt-Bradford was named by USNews & World report as one of the top 50 baccalaureate colleges in the northeast. Pitt-Bradford launched a new minor in international business. Kong Ho, associate professor of art, received a Fulbright US Scholar Program Lecturing Award and will teach mural painting at National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, beginning February 2010. Rick Nelson, associate professor of business management, taught at the School of Economics and Business Administration at Can Tho University in Vietnam. Three students were awarded scholarships through the Vira I. Heinz Scholarship Program for Women in Global Leadership: Vogue Bernard, a human relations major from Shinglehouse who traveled to Stellenbosch, South Africa; Vanessa Durland, a criminal justice major from Meshoppen who studied in London, England; and Romainne Harrod, an English education major from Peoria, Ariz., who spent the summer in Madrid, Spain. The Source, the student newspaper, received first place in the American Scholastic Press Association national competition. Baily???s Beads, Pitt-Bradford???s literary magazine, was awarded the Gold Medalist Certificate from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and a First Place Award from the American Scholastic Press Association. Pitt-Bradford was named to GI Jobs??? 2010 list of Military Friendly Schools, which honors the top 15 percent of colleges that are doing the most to embrace America???s veterans as students. Pitt-Bradford was proactive in helping and engaging veterans with the federal roll-out of the Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill. Pitt-Bradford enrolled a total of 32 veterans or dependents of veterans who received educational benefits. The National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators honored Pitt-Bradford for its work with CARE For Children. Science In Motion made a record 40,200 students contacts during the 2008-09 school year. This represented more than 4,000 different students at 33 participating schools. Mobile educators drove more than 23,200 miles to provide 1,824 labs to more than 60 different teachers. College in the High School at Pitt-Bradford doubled its enrollment and expects to more than double its enrollment again during the 2009-2010 year. Pitt-Bradford will be partnering with 18 high school teachers at nine different schools to offer college courses. Pitt???s Board of Trustees approved the construction and naming of the 150-seat chapel the Harriett B. Wick chapel for which a cornerstone-laying ceremony was conducted in September. Pitt-Bradford received a $1 million gift from the Agnes L. Thomas estate to create the Agnes and Lewis Lyle Thomas Scholarship Challenge. During FY09, Pitt-Bradford received gifts totaling $2,576,265, the eighth consecutive year fundraising has topped the $1 million mark on campus. Of Pitt-Bradford???s faculty and staff, 63 percent made a gift, the third consecutive year that participation has surpassed 50 percent. During FY09, Pitt-Bradford was awarded a total of $868,800 in competitive grants from the Department of Education, the National Institutes of Health and the Small Business Administration.
