- Mission
- UM-Kansas City provides instruction, research, and service for continuous state and regional progress. It is the only university in western Missouri offering graduate and professional study at the highest academic level. UMKC's programming focuses on three areas: Lead in the Life and Health Sciences, Deepen and Expand Strength in the Visual and Performing Arts, Develop a Professional Workforce; Collaborate in Urban Issues and Education from model undergraduate education to graduate and professional study. With emphasis on graduate and professional study, including an innovative Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program, UMKC prepares scholars for the challenges of the 21st century. In partnership with the Kansas City community and its educational institutions, UMKC is active in the region's economic and cultural development. UMKC also provides lifelong learning, including graduate and non-credit classes for business, education, and government, through its video network. UMKC began as the private University of Kansas City, established in 1929; now dominated with professional schools that merged with UKC over time (see below); became part of the University of Missouri System in 1963. Our array of Health Science schools is unique; UMKC is one of only 25 institutions in the nation granting degrees in four health science areas. Additionally, the Conservatory of Music has earned national and international recognition through its music and dance performance, composition, teaching and scholarship. UMKC's Conservatory has been the most comprehensive music and dance educational center in the Midwest since 1906.
