- The University of Maine is a comprehensive public institution that is growing in international stature. In 2009, UMaine is a distinctive and vital institution, serving Maine as a modern land-grant university and sea-grant college while also playing a significant role in the national context of higher education. It is strong and dynamic, serving as the flagship university in the University of Maine System. UMaine offers the range of programs and services befitting a comprehensive university, on a human scale where people know and care about one another. UMaine leads the way in academic research, attracting the vast majority of all federal funding that comes to Maine's institutions of publish higher education. It is one of just 151 institutions (eight percent) nationwide to be classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a "Research University-High Research Activity" institution. As a by-product of research UMaine is developing new businesses. In fact, UMaine's efforts in this area have led UMaine to a top national ranking in the number of spin-off companies per investment in university research. The impact of UMaine on the state's economy is dramatic. In addition to the jobs created through its expertise and initiative, it has a total annual economic output of $698 million, adding $7.65 to the state's economy for every dollar of state investment. It is one of the state's largest employers and has a worldwide alumni network of 95,000. With 11.818 enrolled students, UMaine is the largest higher education institution in Maine. Most of those students live either on campus or in close proximity, making UMaine the largest residential college community in Maine. The home of Maine's only Division I athletic program, UMaine proudly holds two NCAA national championships in ice hockey. Black Bears excel in the classroom as well. In February, 258 student-athletes were honored for achieving grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Students come from Maine, 47 other states and 84 countries. UMaine offers the state's widest variety of academic programs and its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest liberal arts institution in Maine. With the only Phi Beta Kappa chapter at a Maine public institution, a thriving honors college and several other marks of distinction that affirm the quality of its educational program, UMaine maintains its focus on providing the kind of teaching and learning opportunities that develop graduates well-prepared to become leaders in businesses, institutions and communities.
