- Comfort food in a comfortable Tommy Doyle's By Gwenn Friss Cape Cod Times October 16, 2008 Through the open door, Tommy Doyle?s beckons you, its gleaming wood-and-brass interior promising a break from the busy day. And that?s just what you?ll find inside. The comfortable Irish pub at 334 Main Street in Hyannis (508-862-9430) is bigger and airier than you might expect. There are two big-screen TVs behind the bar and a friendly bartender. The whole effect produces a low-key, come-in-and-sit-for-a-wee-bit vibe. In a place named Tommy Doyle?s, my first meal had to be an Irish one, so I went with the classic corned beef and cabbage ($10.99) the waiter suggested. Not being a big gravy person, I ordered the sweet onion gravy on the side. The gravy was a little sweet for me, but it was well-made, and using just a touch moistened the meat considerably. While the meat was a little dry, the creamy mashed potatoes more than made up for it. They were heavenly, and unexpected since corned beef is usually served with boiled potatoes. There was a wedge of boiled cabbage and one perfectly cooked carrot chip tucked into the potatoes. I could make a dinner of sides ($3.99 each) with the creamy potatoes and mixed vegetables. The menu said, ?Don?t be afraid to ask for a side of bread to help with the plate cleaning,? and I?m so glad I did. It was warm and toasty, with a little garlicky melted butter. I took home half of the corned beef dinner because the meal easily fed two. On my next visit to Tommy Doyle?s, I tried the other food that, for me, is the measure of a good pub: a burger. I did a takeout lunch and had the daily special ($9.99), which came with pesto, mozzarella and onion rings. There was a small cup of barbecue sauce in the bag. I?m glad they didn?t put it on the burger because the flavors in the flame-broiled outside covered with pesto and a thin layer of cheese were perfectly balanced without it. My only complaint is the single, somewhat tough leaf of lettuce that went on it The eight onion rings, hand-cut and fried golden, were a hearty and delicious side. Soup for the day was beef and vegetables ($3.99). It was too salty, but certainly tasted homemade. The beef broth shimmered slightly with just the right amount of fat and the soup tasted full and rich ? like stew ? even though it was a clear broth. Usually that means the chef simmered beef bones for a long time. Tommy Doyle?s serves a big menu of hearty food, including seafood, fajitas, salads and an all-day Irish breakfast. They serve Stella Artois on tap ($5 for a goblet). I think I could become a regular here.
