Mission
Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is an independent institution with an international reputation. SU's Main Campus has a striking physical presence, situated on a hill overlooking the City of Syracuse. The grandeur of its 230 collegiate buildings complements the spacious grassy areas and stone walkways within the 200-acre landscaped grounds. Just down the road from Main Campus is South Campus, a residential area that contains its own student center, dining hall, recreational fields, and other satellite services. Recent property acquisitions have extended the campus into the heart of downtown Syracuse, adding a more contemporary, urban element to the University. Syracuse University is guided by its vision of Scholarship In Action and offers the best of two learning environments. As a major research university, it is large enough to host a wide variety of academic and extracurricular activities, and yet its nine undergraduate colleges provide smaller, more intimate settings in which students have opportunities to build lasting relationships with mentoring faculty members. Scholarship In Action stresses the importance of interactive programs, where faculty and students learn, discover, and create through engagement together and with practitioners, the broader community, and the world. In addition to a large selection of majors, students can select dual majors, minors, or individualized majors with assistance from an academic advisor. In virtually every aspect of student life at Syracuse, choices abound. The many options of undergraduate majors and minors, the range of courses available, opportunities to study abroad, internships, the scope of residential living opportunities, and extracurricular activities make Syracuse University attractive to those who value a diverse educational experience.
