"The Hohokam people originally settled in Scottsdale and the other outlying areas in the region. Despite their primitive ways, this ancient civilization is responsible for the complex network of canals in the region used as irrigation. This enabled farming to thrive even in a city in the Sonoran Desert. Then, under mysterious circumstances, the Hohokam's ancient civilization disappeared without so much as a trace. It is believed that their disappearance was due to a prolonged drought, forcing them to evacuate the area. Even today, many of these networks of canals remain, with some being renovated and put to use in the early 20th century.
