- Springfield College has an international reputation for educating tomorrow's leaders for some of the most vital careers. Graduates enter the workforce or advanced education with the advantages of top-quality education plus real-world experience. As early as the first year, students perform field work or service learning. It's an advantage based in the college's mission: education in spirit, mind and body for leadership in service to others. Since the college's founding in 1885, this Humanics philosophy has guided academics and campus life. Students serve in schools, nonprofits and public agencies, developing their abilities while improving life in the region. They also serve business internships. The college has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The place where James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891, Springfield College is known today for providing a balanced and diversified educational experience in the health sciences, human and social services, sport management and movement studies, education, business, and the arts and sciences. It is the first choice of more than 75 percent of its first-year students. There are 3,590 undergraduate and 1,517 graduate students on the main campus and 11 regional School of Human Services campuses. They come from 36 states, mostly Northeastern, and 13 foreign countries. More than 85 percent of first-year students return as sophomores, and about 65 percent of them graduate within five years: both figures above national averages. The faculty includes national and international experts, most with the highest degrees in their fields. Most undergraduate students live on the campus. It's a vibrant environment with excellent facilities; co-curricular activities; health, recreation and wellness programs; arts programs and cultural events; and one of the largest athletics programs in the nation for a mid-sized college. There are 26 varsity sports for men and women; nine sub-varsity sports; 12 club sports; and extensive intramurals. The college is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III, Eastern College Athletic Conference, New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, Empire 8 Conference, and other associations for volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, lacrosse and golf. The campus is in picturesque New England on 151 acres. It's an easy drive to Boston, New York City and Albany. Top-quality academic facilities include the new award-winning Athletic Training/Exercise Science facility, and also newly renovated classroom buildings and laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. Ten residence halls offer single-sex and coeducational living, and relatively independent living for third- and fourth-year students. Excellent eateries include casual dining in an atrium with lake view, and the main dining hall with a variety of creative fresh food stations accommodating individual tastes. The campus is completely wired and has wireless zones, smart classrooms, computer labs, a videoconferencing facility, conference center, and language lab. There is a new television studio, radio station and journalism lab. The new campus union houses student activities and services. Extensive athletic and recreational facilities include the award-winning Wellness Center and Field House. There are strength and conditioning facilities, a six-lane running track, multi-purpose courts, classrooms, laboratories, and more. There are playing fields with synthetic surfaces; a six-lane, 50-meter pool; a 2000-seat, multi-purpose arena with upper-level jogging track; a gymnastics center; a wrestling room; and racquetball/handball and tennis courts. There are baseball and softball fields; an eight-lane outdoor track; and indoor batting/pitching cages. For arts studies and programs, the newly renovated Fuller Arts Center is the site of performances and the Visual Arts Center contains studio work space and a public exhibition center.
