- SMU cultivates well-rounded leaders through a liberal arts foundation and nationally competitive undergraduate and graduate academic programs in seven degree-granting schools. Special programs include interdisciplinary majors such as international studies and environmental science, Honors Program with individualized studies, joint programs with University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, international study through 30 programs in 16 countries, funded student research projects locally and abroad, and a living/learning program in urban studies. SMU is one of the few universities in the country to have a voting student member of the Board of Trustees. SMU-in-Taos (New Mexico) offers summer courses and includes excavation of a 13th-century Indian pueblo. One of the top collegiate lecture programs in the country brings national and international leaders to the campus. The Meadows Museum at SMU houses one of the finest collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. Student leadership opportunities include internships, mentoring, community service, research experience, and 200 student organizations. SMU's campus is five miles north of downtown Dallas, a center of commerce and culture offering diverse career opportunities.
