Sam Diego's offers family-friendly fare - Sam Diego's Mexican Cookery & Bar Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, MA) - October 26, 2007 Author: Laurie Higgins Even though the weather has remained so balmy we haven't packed away our summer clothes, we recently decided it was time to head to the mall to shop for more seasonally appropriate clothes. Afterward we took our two younger children, and the requisite best friend that every teenage girl needs in order to shop, to Sam Diego's Mexican Cookery & Bar. Our children have eaten there only once, but it was memorable enough to qualify as a favorite in their minds. They love the vivid colors, warm atmosphere and free tortilla chips and salsa the server brings as soon as we sit down. Add some fun frozen specialty drinks ($3.95) and they are happy diners. Three happy kids made for a relaxing dinner for my husband and me, and relax we did, for quite a while, before our food arrived. Thank goodness for those chips and frappes. My son's Billy the Kid Burger ($4.25 on the Young Juan Kids Menu) and a Willie Wonker chocolate frappe in a fudge-lined glass solidified Sam Diego's as his favorite restaurant. The girls both ordered Chicken Fajita Burritos ($11.25) and Fruitie Tootie frappes. The burritos were rich with gooey cheese and chock-full of marinated chicken, fresh pico de gallo and a mildly spicy red veggie sauce. The frappes were a yummy blend of strawberries, banana, and coconut and pineapple juices. They were a big hit. Less popular was the dry Spanish rice served on the side and the bland black beans served in a crisp and pretty tortilla basket. Knowing that Mexican food in general translates to big portions, I decided to order just an entr?e and splurge on a margarita. At $12.89, the Beef and Chicken Combo Fajitas left me plenty of money to order a Gold Margarita ($6.65 for the smaller 17-ounce size). I love fajitas, not only for the taste, but for the fun of being served an array of food that allows me to make my own little roll-ups. Sam Diego's offering didn't disappoint. On one side of my plate, a crescent-shaped dish was filled with lettuce, grated cheese, olives, pico de gallo and lettuce. Next to that was plenty of marinated and grilled chicken and steak. The flavors of lime and cilantro added great flavor to both meats, but even though the steak was a perfect medium rare, I enjoyed the chicken more and would order just that next time. My husband ordered Felipe's Fiesta Combo ($11.99), which included a tasty chicken and sour cream burrito topped with mildly spicy Chili con Queso and a delicious pork tamale steamed in a corn husk that had a nice smoky corn flavor topped with a piquant red sauce. A run-of-the-mill hard-shell taco and the aforementioned dry Spanish rice completed the expansive meal. All of the dishes we sampled at Sam Diego's nicely balanced that tricky fine line of moderately spicy - not so hot as to offend, yet not quite spicy enough for the true aficionado. It works well for a crowd, especially since it offers an excellent selection of hot sauces to add more heat and flavor. Our favorite was the El Yucateco salsa picante de chile habanero, made with green habaneroes.
