Kids bike seats are available in many shapes, sizes and styles and are designed to suit every kid's comfort needs. The first thing to consider when buying a kids bike seat is what size is most appropriate for your child? Kids' bikes are generally sized differently than standard adult bikes (in terms of frame size rather than pedal size). Even when comparing a standard bike to a kid's bike, the seat base height and standover heights among different brands can differ significantly. In general, a bike may be advertised as being for a "5-year-old" or a "10-year-old", while a child may be a little over a year old and still be able to comfortably stand on a regular bike seat.
There are also several other considerations beyond those mentioned above. Standover height is important because it allows you to determine how high your child is when they're standing on their bike. Standover heights are measured from the ground to the highest point on the back tire in millimeters. Among the various kids bike sizes, the smallest is the inseam height, which is forty-two millimeters under the handlebar tube and thirty-two centimeters under the top of the seat tube.
Seat tube length is an important consideration in getting a proper fit. Your kid should be able to sit comfortably and feel at ease on his bike seat, but at the same time he should be able to reach the handlebars easily. If he's very tall or has large thighs or legs, his lower body will need more room than his upper body to get into the proper riding position and remain comfortable. The result is that he may not be sitting straight on his bike.
An inseam measurement, however, is only one way to get an accurate way of measuring your kid's bike fit. There are many ways to measure his height. One way is to stand on his bike and reach his hands up over the handlebars with his arms at his side. Another way to measure his height is to put his hands behind his back, place his fingers on the bars across from his armpit, and then reach out with his hands in a straight line to his belly button.
