More details

Mission
Roanoke College gives students valuable depth and breadth in their education. The depth comes from intensive learning through strong majors and independent studies, special research opportunities, internships and other forms of experiential learning. The breadth comes from a series of unique core courses that span the four years of the undergraduate experience. At Roanoke College, students learn from professors who are experts in their fields. Ninety-five percent of the college's tenure-track faculty members have the highest degrees possible. Almost all professors practice what they teach or contribute to scholarly works in their academic areas or do both. Because of this close-knit academic environment, students learn directly through the experiences of these experts. The type of mentoring relationship that many students have with their Roanoke professors leads them to excellent graduate school placement or directly into fulfilling careers. In fact, almost all seniors (about 95 percent) receive job offers within six months of graduation or go on to graduate school. While at Roanoke College, students also benefit from many opportunities to get involved as leaders or participants in the college's 100+ clubs and organizations. With half of its students from Virginia and half from out of state, the college offers regional and national exposure. Alumni have attended a fine selection of graduate schools such as Johns Hopkins, Duke, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale. In addition, two recent Roanoke alumni were inducted into the national medical school honor society at the University of Virginia. Graduates also have gone on to fascinating careers ranging from scientific research, underwater archaeology and medicine to television production, humanitarianism and government as well as starting their own businesses. Yet at the heart of all who pass through the college's doors is an overwhelming desire to pursue the things they love.
