More details
- Mission
- Founded in 1853 as a co-educational frontier college with a traditional curriculum, Monmouth College emerged in the 20th century as a nationally recognized liberal arts college, praised for the friendliness of its campus and its strong academic programs, commitment to student-faculty collaboration, and outstanding faculty mentoring and advising. The college has earned respect among its peers for the impressive percentage of graduates who attend top graduate and professional schools and form successful careers in science, education, business and the arts. In the early 1990s, the trustees, faculty and administration began strategic discussions about ways to prepare the college for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. One result was extensive improvement of the physical plant, with the construction of new buildings, including residence halls and an athletic center, a substantially renovated and expanded library, and the completion of significant upgrades to campus grounds. Today, the Monmouth campus is acclaimed for its beauty and for facilities that surpass those of most comparable colleges. Further improvements are on the horizon. In addition to its intimate, friendly atmosphere and its beautiful campus, Monmouth's Scottish heritage gives it a unique ambiance. A first-class bagpipe band ushers in new students at their matriculation ceremony, marches them from center stage at commencement, and plays at campus functions such as homecoming and honors convocation. Monmouth's signature is its focus on "integrated learning." Monmouth faculty are certain that integrated, interdisciplinary learning will be central to the liberal arts curriculum of the future. Consequently, Monmouth has implemented an innovative general education program, a sequence of courses including the first-year Introduction to the Liberal Arts, the sophomore Global Perspectives, Reflections in the junior year, and the senior capstone, Citizenship. The ability to connect ideas across disciplines, to move from one disciplinary perspective to another, and to understand the contributions of each is a hallmark of the Monmouth graduate. Monmouth's integrated studies curriculum prepares students to meet the challenges of the complex society they will enter. Concentration in a major remains important, but the intellectually ambitious student looking toward success in science, law, industry, politics, education or the arts must understand how the disciplines work together, how domains of knowledge complement each other. Monmouth is now embarked upon a major construction project, the Integrated Learning Center for the Sciences and Business, which will bring together biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, physics, psychology, economics, business and accounting faculty and students for collaborative coursework and research. In today's world, business and science converge, but most graduates lack the background needed to understand how scientific discoveries move from the research lab to the marketplace. Through experiential, integrative education, we give our students opportunities to develop the requisite critical and analytical skills. A complementary characteristic of Monmouth College's academic program is the emphasis we place upon each student as an individual and upon "engaged learning" through opportunities for interactions among students, with dedicated professors, and in well-designed co-curricular programs and activities. The college continues to focus on admitting good students, teaching and advising them well, and providing them with opportunities to be challenged and changed by new ideas, new experiences, and new opportunities for intellectual engagement and personal growth.
