- Mission
- For 125 years, Michigan Tech faculty have explored the boundaries of knowledge while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students to become citizens that improve our sustainable world. Michigan Tech students create the future in 130 degree programs in engineering; forest resources; computing; technology; business; economics; natural, physical and environmental sciences; arts; humanities; and social sciences. Students in our Enterprise Program work with industry sponsors on projects such as wakeboard design, homeland security, video games, environmental sustainability, hybrid SUVs (the only Michigan university chosen in the EcoCar competition), and nanosatellites. Business students won a national investment competition two years in a row, and the Clean Snowmobile Challenge team finished second overall in the annual international competition that they host. Programs such as Engineers Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, and Make A Difference Day positively impact communities here and around the globe. Students have created safer football helmets on campus, cared for children in Ghana, helped with earthquake mitigation in Central America, and much more. In fact, Michigan Tech has the nation's largest Master's International Peace Corps program. University research covers a broad spectrum, from wolves and moose on Isle Royale to ion thrusters for NASA, and from computer modeling using gaming technologies to analysis of bridges. Undergraduate and grad students are routinely involved in research, and some of their recent work has looked at student sleep patterns, improved skeet shooting apparatus, and using grasses to remove antibiotics from groundwater. Research expenditures exceed $60 million annually. Our latest degree offerings include theatre and electronic media performance, and physical education. The environmental and mechanical engineering programs rank in the top ten nationally in enrollment. Environmental engineering and mechanical engineering rank in the top ten in degrees awarded. Our scientific and technical communication program is also among the nation's largest. Approximately 260 companies recruit students on campus annually, ensuring an average of five job interviews per student and an 87.5 percent placement rate, which will improve, as does the economy. Outside of classrooms and labs, students enjoy our eighteen-hole golf course; lighted ski hill, trails, and recreational forest; and small-town atmosphere in beautiful Upper Michigan. Our Winter Carnival features world-famous snow statues; and other annual celebrations include the Parade of Nations, with an international food festival; Keweenaw Day, an afternoon on Lake Superior's shore; and Spring Fling, one last on-campus celebration before finals. Our women's basketball team has advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight two years in a row and has one of the nation's highest GPAs. We also have NCAA Division I men's ice hockey and Division II men's football; men's and women's basketball, tennis, track and field, Nordic skiing, and cross country; in addition to women's soccer and volleyball. Club sports include lacrosse, women's hockey, and paintball. The biggest game on campus, however, is broomball, where students slide around on ice and hit a rubber volleyball with a broom. You have to see it to believe it, and you can via our webcams. Overall, it's a great combination: an excellent education in a beautiful location.
