- Mahoney's secret ingredient They love food Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, MA) - June 22, 2007 Author: Laurie Higgins I've heard plenty of good things about Mahoney's Atlantic Bar & Grill, but inexpensive wasn't one of them, so it didn't occur to me to give it the $20 test until a group of friends invited me to join them there for a girls' night out. It was a fun challenge that illustrated you can have a wonderful dining experience that doesn't drain the bank account. With appetizers in the $8-$12 range and entrees starting at $16, it was obvious I was going to have to get creative. The other four women in my party chose one of the special salads to start for $8, followed by $21 seafood entrees, but the server didn't bat an eye when I told her I wanted to try several different flavors. I began with a cup of the soup of the day, cream of mushroom with baby shrimp for $5. The velvety cream broth had a rich, earthy flavor that was enhanced by the thinly sliced shiitake mushrooms and bits of tender shrimp. It was very tasty. For the next course, I chose the garden salad ($7), which was a generous and fresh offering of mixed baby greens, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, grated carrots and minced red cabbage topped with sprouts. The house-made balsamic vinaigrette added a terrific tang to enhance the crisp veggies. For size, freshness and variety, it rated among the best house salads I've ever had. During my careful study of the menu, I noticed that the vegetarian choices included a grilled polenta and portabella mushroom entr?e with marinated seasonal vegetables for $16. A smaller portion of the same dish was half price on the appetizer menu, so I chose that for my dinner. Three triangles of grilled polenta were topped with horizontal slices of zucchini and summer squash and two portabella mushroom caps. It was incredibly flavorful and nicely executed with a topping of tiny diced tomatoes, fresh chives and grated raw beets. The smoky flavor of the grilled vegetables married perfectly with the cumin in the polenta, and every bite was a treat. Our server knew the menu well and made great recommendations for those who were indecisive. One person in our party had a food allergy, and the server double-checked with the chef about ingredients before placing the order and then later came back with a list of ingredients when I asked about the spices in the polenta. The quickness of her response to our questions indicated a rapport between the dining room and the kitchen staff that adds to the diners' experience. These folks love food and know how to serve it well. Mahoney's Atlantic Grill & Bar proves that you don't have to sacrifice flavor or service to get an affordable meal. And if you are in the mood to splurge, this would be a great spot for that, too.
