- Land Ho! offers good food and good times By Laurie Higgins December 11, 2008 3:35 PM Land Ho! in Orleans is known for its local color, apparent the minute you walk in the door. The first thing your eyes feast upon are hundreds of brightly colored signs from local businesses hanging from every inch of the rafters. Interspersed among the signs are some creative vanity license plates, and the walls sport restaurant owner John Murphy's lovely paintings. Add a whole bunch of local folks dining and chatting animatedly at the bar and you have a festive atmosphere that makes for a fun dining experience. Square tables are covered with red-checkered tablecloths, and seating is offered for two or four in wood and leather chairs. Service is fast, friendly and overall excellent, with food coming in a timely manner and empty dishes cleared immediately. Our server also had a great command of the menu items and ingredients. The menu is basic tavern fare, handwritten on enormous blackboards hanging over the bar and the counter separating the bar from the dining area. There was a pasta dish, steak, ribs, salads, burgers and plenty of fried or broiled seafood. Most of the menu fit into my budget and even offered the opportunity to sample appetizers first. My husband ordered a cup of the kale soup ($4.50) and found it to be a hearty mixture of linguica, potatoes, beans, tomatoes and, of course, kale. It was a tad too salty and not quite hot enough, but he enjoyed it. I began with a small Caesar salad that was anything but small. For $4.50, I got a generous serving of crisp romaine with plenty of fresh grated Romano cheese and croutons. For dinner my husband had the fried oysters ($14.99), which were again a generous serving of very fresh oysters with a crunchy coating. They were served with crispy shoestring french fries and a side of coleslaw. The coleslaw was fresh, but a bit bland, easily corrected with a couple of dashes of Tabasco. I tried the clam pie ($9.50), which was quite tasty. It came as a nice sized wedge of flaky pastry filled with a savory seafood stuffing. The stuffing was chock-full of meaty clams. The pie was topped with lemon beurre blanc that added a wonderful complimentary flavor. The dish came with coleslaw. After dinner, we sat and watched the crowd for a while, thoroughly entertained. Land Ho! is the perfect place to meet friends or family and enjoy a decent and affordable meal that will leave your stomach full and your mood full of good cheer. Hours: 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays; light menu until midnight, bar closes at 1 a.m. Open at noon Sundays
