Gehlen House Bed and Breakfast and Kalmes Restaurant and store, located in St. Donatus, Iowa, offer an historic Luxembourg charm. The Gehlen House building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features traditional architectural traits of Luxembourg including a gabeled end roof. While the building currently functions as a seven room bed and breakfast inn, it has been a post office, a road-side tavern and a doll museum. The Kalmes Restaurant and Store has been in operation since 1960. Their tradition of sausage making originates from Peter Kalmes who emmigrated from Luxembourg around 1840. Five generations of the Kalmes family have prepared Kraut sausage, Luxemburgers call it Tripen sausage, and serve it at the restaurant. This popular sausage is available for sale at the restaurant store.
