More details
- Mission
- Hofstra University is a dynamic, private university where students succeed and study in about 140 undergraduate and 150 graduate programs of study. The major divisions of the university provide students with a broad array of academic offerings: the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication, the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the School of Education, Health and Human Services, the School of Law, and Honors College. In 2010, the University is planning a year-long celebration in recognition of Hofstra's 75 anniversary. A student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1 and an average class size of 22 allow professors to teach small classes that emphasize interaction, critical thinking and analysis. Hofstra's students are motivated and success-oriented, and Hofstra provides the resources they need to reach their goals: an outstanding faculty, extensive academic resources and state-of-the-art facilities. Internships that take advantage of the proximity of New York City and special educational programs are designed to develop individual students' interests and abilities. Hofstra's faculty is one of its greatest resources. Ninety-one percent of full-time faculty members hold the highest degree in their fields. Faculty members are dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research, and many have been recognized with the nation' highest honors, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and Emmy Awards. Hofstra's distinctive, 240-acre campus, a recognized arboretum, is located 25 miles from New York City. The campus features state-of-the art teaching facilities, including a converged newsroom and multimedia classroom, one of the most advanced academic trading rooms in the nation, six theaters and a rooftop observatory. The Hofstra libraries contain 1.2 million print volumes and provide 24/7 electronic access to more than 90,000 journals and electronic books. Additionally, there are 37 residence halls, 21 eateries, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and extensive athletic and recreational facilities.
