Company description
Brookline Builders is an historic restoration company based in Lancaster County, one of the richest cultural areas in the US for historic homes and barns. We specialize in homes that are at least 80 years old.
When our customers combine the trades that we offer in the Masonry, Slate Roofing, and Carpentry areas, they find a well oiled machine of skilled craftsman that allows the work on their older home to proceed with care.
We are dedicated to preserving the heritage sitting right in our back yard, and many of the expert services we offer are in historic restoration. For years, we have been forging relationships with merchants and craftsmen who are as committed as we are to the love of the old ways.
Why do we single out masonry as a specialty at Brookline? Because each stone or brick in a solid historic structure is unique and requires special attention. When a stone falls out of a wall, if it is not recovered, it is lost forever. It cannot just be replaced as if it were a piece of steel or plastic. Based in historic Lancaster County, Brookline has the expertise and the patience to approach each masonry project with an eye on preserving a legacy, not just fixing it up with any old rock. If necessary, we will scour the surrounding area for a piece which exactly meets the needs of the original stone or brick wall rather than compromise with an artificial replacement. Each stone plays a part in the finished look and quality, and our masons know how to carefully place each one.
The oldest existing structures in the world are of stone and brick. They stand in undeniable testimony to the tried and true building methods of yesteryear. Our post-industrial buildings made of metal, plywood, and fiberglass are already rusting and rotting around us, and even modern attempts at masonry are crumbling as we speak. At Brookline, we know why modern masonry repointing methods cannot hold a candle to the integrity of ancient and historic stone and brickwork. We have mastered the same methods in our work that our forebears used when building the original. We know that nature can be very harsh on human structures. Despite extreme elements and changing weather, hundreds of years have had little or no effect on the historic stone and brick buildings around us. Because they take more time, these methods are no longer employed by mainstream building companies, however the masons at Brookline have the skill and patience to restore your brick and stonework the right way.
For example, Portland cement is regularly used by modern masons in their work. Portland mortar is very brittle when it dries, and slathering it between the bricks in a wall or chimney severely limits the life of the finished product. Sadly, not every craftsman knows the secrets of using natural lime mortar in their masonry work. Natural lime mortar expands and contracts with the changing temperatures while Portland mortar tries to withstand these changes through resistance, but it cannot beat time and the elements this way, and eventually patches of stone and brick collapse out of place. This is an illustration of why modern engineering is still no match for the rich pool of knowledge and skill used in historic masonry. Brookline has acquired this knowledge through the years, and has the resources needed to restore, and even build masonry so that it will last
Don't trust your masonry restoration project to just anyone.Brookline has a proven track record of outstanding stone and brickwork. We know the fine details involved in repairing and tuckpointing a stone wall or chimney so that it will withstand extreme temperatures, severe weather, and the test of time. We use only the best Lime Putty Mortar.
