- Mission
- As Arkansas's public liberal arts university, Henderson State University offers its 3,600 undergraduate students an education based on a comprehensive core of courses in the arts and sciences. Henderson is proud to be the only school in Arkansas that is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, which identifies and supports high quality public liberal arts and sciences institutions. While the arts and sciences form the foundation for all academic programs at Henderson, the university has an excellent reputation in teacher education, business administration, and several other fields, too. The academic program at Henderson is divided into three colleges. The Matt Locke Ellis College of Arts and Sciences offers a comprehensive core of liberal arts courses, with majors in disciplines from fine arts and the social sciences to technology and the natural sciences. The School of Business offers the bachelor of business administration degree, and it also runs the program leading to the BS degree in aviation. Teachers College, Henderson receives national recognition for the quality of its mentor-teacher program for first-year teachers. Henderson's campus continues to expand, and more students are choosing Henderson as their university of choice. On-campus enrollment has hit a 12-year high. A large freshman class contributed to the increase, with over 800 new students enrolled Fall 2007. The class is about a third larger than last year's freshman class and that bodes well for future enrollment growth. The increase in numbers of freshmen will affect our community in many positive ways and will strengthen the university's efforts to develop and maintain an excellent academic program and a vital campus life. Henderson is committed to selecting and supporting a diverse student population, both domestic and international. The student body includes around 100 students from more than 20 countries around the world. Henderson has a tradition and history of providing quality education in an embracing atmosphere. Henderson faculty and staff take the extra time to help students make the transition from high school to college life. It is one of our state's oldest universities and serves as the alma mater of many of our nation's most successful men and women who refer to it as the "School with a Heart."
