- Mission
- Hastings College is a private, undergraduate, four-year, residential liberal arts college. It was founded in 1882 by a group of men and women seeking to establish a Presbyterian-related college dedicated to high academic and cultural standards that still apply over 125 years later. Our home is Hastings, Nebraska, a friendly, progressive, fun college town of 25,000. The Hastings College campus is situated on 109 beautifully landscaped acres. Within that space sits 40 buildings spanning from the traditional McCormick Hall built in 1883 to the Osborne Family Sports Complex / Fleharty Educational Center built in 2002 and the comfortable Bronco Village student apartments completed in 2006. An outdoor track complex was completed in 2007 and The Morrison-Reeves Science Center, a brand new state of the art student learning facility, opened for classes in 2009. Hastings College is named one of America's Best Value Colleges by The Princeton Review, ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the nation by US News & World Report, America's Best Colleges 2009, named a 2010 "Best College in the Midwestern Region" by The Princeton Review , listed by Kaplan/Newsweek as one of "America's 369 Most Interesting Schools," and recognized among the top liberal arts colleges in America by The Washington Monthly.Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), the college enrolls students representing many denominational groups. One of the most successful and popular features of Hastings College's academic program, January Term, allows students to immerse themselves in one course, instead of four or five. Students can focus on a topic in their major field or study something new. J-Term at HC is a time for discovery, innovation and unforgettable learning experiences. In past years, student groups have traveled to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Central America, Italy and Ireland. On campus classes have included a study of the Beatles, the psychology of superheroes, and comic and graphic novel story telling and illustration. In the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, a national survey that measures student satisfaction across a broad spectrum of college life, Hastings College students expressed greater satisfaction than did students from the national comparison group on items such as: the instruction in my major field is excellent, tuition paid is a worthwhile investment, and it is an enjoyable experience to be a student on this campus. Over the past four years, Hastings College students completed nearly 50,000 hours of service-learning on the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, in Appalachia, on US-Mexico borderlands, and locally in homeless shelters, churches and schools. Hastings College has been named to the President???s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for its exemplary community service, innovative service-learning programs and demonstrated commitment to strengthening the community. Hastings College is known nationally for its success in fostering a campus environment where people work together in a spirit of collegiality, collaboration, openness and mutual respect. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) presented Hastings College President Phillip Dudley, Jr. with the Ralph S. Brown Award for Shared Governance at a ceremony in Washington, DC
