- Mission
- Florida Southern College is a rapidly rising star among the nation's best private colleges. With a mission to prepare students to make consequential contributions to our world, the College enrolls 1832 full-time residential undergraduate students from 44 states and 31 countries on its scenic, 100-acre campus. Nationally recognized for its focus on engaged learning, FSC guarantees every student an internship and study abroad experience, and provides students with numerous opportunities for student-faculty collaborative research, performance, and service learning. With so many opportunities to prepare for the world beyond college, it is no surprise that 94% of graduates report landing great jobs in their fields or continuing their studies at prestigious graduate schools within three months of graduation. FSC offers more than 50 dynamic majors in fields such as art, biology, business, communication, education, environmental studies, music and theater performance, nursing, and psychology. Pre-professional programs include pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, and pre-law. Distinctive master???s programs also are offered in business, nursing, and education. The College's commitment to engaged learning is reflected in its 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a faculty excited about providing students with personalized, hands-on learning both in and out of the classroom. Examples include student entrepreneurs working with TOMS Shoes to distribute shoes for homeless children; marketing students assisting Chinese executives with the expansion of a Hong Kong theme park; horticulture students developing some of the world???s first virus-free roses; computer science students designing robots to enhance teaching; education students honing their skills at the College???s Preschool and Kindergarten Lab Schools; and voice students performing alongside members of the famed Metropolitan Opera. An innovative new program-the Junior Journey-guarantees all entering students the opportunity to study domestically or overseas at no cost other than minimal course credit charges. Nearly 50% of FSC students study abroad and credit their travel experience with expanding their world view. A group of students tutored impoverished children in Honduras this year during spring break. Others are pursuing engaged learning in China and Hong Kong, England, France, Italy, and Spain. Semester programs are offered in England, Germany, Mexico, Northern Ireland, and Spain. The facilities at Florida Southern-designed by internationally acclaimed architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Robert AM Stern-are world class. A state-of-the-art, 24/7 technology center just opened, as have modern residence halls featuring bedrooms with stunning views of Lake Hollingsworth. A new classroom building, to include a language lab, film studies center, and art gallery, opens in fall 2010. Other new facilities are the cyber caf?? serving Starbucks in the library, the dining hall, a cutting-edge nursing building, and the Water Dome, also designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Our involved students enjoy outstanding student life programming that includes championship NCAA Division II events in 18 sports, intramurals, more than 70 clubs and organizations, a volunteer-oriented Greek system, and popular weekend programming. The free lakefront program features kayaks, canoes, and sailboats. One visit to Florida Southern is all it takes to see why our students say we're a college "On the Move!" Great academics, a dynamic student life culture, exceptional campus beauty, and the success of our graduates are just a few of the reasons top college guides such as The Princeton Review and the Fiske Guide to Colleges tout FSC as a great value.
