More details
- Mission
- Fairfield University is a Jesuit and Catholic University that was established in 1942 and is rooted in one of the world's oldest intellectual and spiritual traditions. Fairfield prepares students for leadership and service in a constantly changing world through broad intellectual inquiry, the pursuit of social justice, and cultivation of the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. Located just 60 miles outside New York City, in the heart of a region where the future takes shape, more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 36 states and 39 foreign countries are enrolled in the University's six schools. The comprehensive core curriculum, 35 undergraduate majors, 36 graduate programs, 20 Division I athletic teams, and more than 100 student organizations offer a wide range of opportunities for research, internships, service, and civic engagement. When considering an applicant for admission, Fairfield looks at measures of academic achievement, students' curricular and extracurricular activities, their life skills and accomplishments, and the degree to which they have an appreciation for Fairfield's mission and outlook. Students are challenged to be creative and active members of a community in which diversity is encouraged and honored. With its commitment to education for an inspired life, Fairfield has developed a unique educational model to ensure that students receive the motivating guidance they need to reach their fullest potential. The integration of living and learning is at the heart of a Fairfield education. Students learn what it means to be a fully engaged member of the campus community by participating in a living and learning community based on their interests. Students have ample opportunities for vocational exploration when their studies begin to focus around the questions, "What really interests me? What do I really feel drawn to?" Students are encouraged to explore civic engagement and their own role in the larger world - applying what has been learned and "giving back." Finally, full integration of all learning opportunities begins to occur as they discern how they want to put their gifts and education to work in the world. As a result of this holistic model of education, Fairfield graduates have been highly successful in gaining admission to selective graduate schools, while others go on to achieving successful and satisfying careers. A significant achievement for Fairfield University is that 55 Fairfield graduates have been tapped as Fulbright scholars since 1993.
