- St. Francis is the first hospital in the world to use revolutionary tissue technology to rebuild patients’ hearts. Dr. Gerdisch has pioneered the use of a new innovative technology for heart surgery. Dr. Gerdisch is repairing heart valves and interior heart tissue with a unique bio-scaffold patch called the Extracellular Matrix (ECM)™, which harnesses the body’s innate ability to repair damaged tissue. Over time, the patch is replaced by the patients’ own heart tissue. In August 2007, Dr. Gerdisch became the first in the world to apply this technology inside the heart. He has since performed 52 cardiac reconstructions using ECM. The ECM is derived from porcine small intestines and is processed in a way that removes the cells, leaving the complex structural matrix intact. Once surgically implanted, it serves as a scaffold, allowing the patient’s cells to infiltrate and ultimately replace the ECM scaffold.
