Colgate University is a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college for students with diverse backgrounds and talents who are preparing for lives of leadership and productive citizenship. Colgate is a community of leaders and doers. Whether in fields of academic distinction, off-campus study programs, student activities program, or the success and tradition of our Division I varsity athletics, Colgate students think big and succeed on the highest level. Because of the school's highly personalized setting, individual contribution is essential; every voice makes a difference. Students have many options to tailor their own academic program in a curriculum with 51 majors that emphasize interdisciplinary study and critical thinking. Faculty expertise and a commitment to undergraduates mean Colgate excels in preparing students for a wide range of careers in evolving professions, graduate and professional school, and civic leadership. One distinct advantage that Colgate holds over larger universities is that faculty, rather than graduate students, teach all courses. When it comes to research, the advantage becomes even more pronounced, as faculty in all departments and programs closely engage students in research projects -- sometimes as early as their first year. By the time they are seniors, it is not unusual for motivated students to have presented work at conferences or even to have co-authored papers in academic journals. The university sends its own faculty on study groups to teach, mentor, and help students explore. Domestic programs also offer opportunities for a semester of study off campus. Colgate's campus is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the nation, and its location in the village of Hamilton in Central New York is a distinguishing feature. Students love the location for its accessibility to outdoor activities. Colgate's Outdoor Education program provides students a chance to explore the natural world while learning about themselves. Whether it is winter camping in the nearby Adirondacks, learning to kayak in nearby Lake Moraine, cross-country and downhill skiing, or learning basic wilderness survival skills, there is something for everyone. Students also bring their passion and enthusiasm to more than 100 extracurricular clubs and activities.
