- Bold portions, subdued seasonings By Laurie Higgins, Cape Cod Times April 25, 2008 Clancy????????????????????????????????s of Dennisport is a happening place. When we met another couple there last Thursday night there was a 20-minute wait at 6:30. We were seated in the back at a lovely table with views of Swan River. This is a restaurant with a loyal following, and the setting alone might be part of the allure, but I????????????????????????????????ll bet the huge portions are also a factor. The menu is large and features mostly typical Cape Cod fare, with a few more intriguing choices on the specials page. Prices are reasonable, and since we had a coupon for $5 off any dinner entr????????????????????????????????e, almost the entire menu fit into my $20 budget. All the dinners come with a deep bowl of salad that consisted of romaine, shredded carrots, sliced red onion and croutons, along with one cherry tomato and a slice of cucumber. The blue cheese dressing that the server told us was made in-house was a tad bland, but the salad was very fresh. The accompanying bread basket had an assortment of crispy rolls and some tasty garlic breadsticks. For dinner I chose the baked salmon and two jumbo shrimp with a coconut curry sauce ($19.99). I got a nice-sized piece of salmon that was cooked perfectly, topped with two giant butterflied shrimp that were crisp but not a bit dry. The flavors of the dish were not as distinct as I had hoped for, and that was a theme for the whole meal. It was as if the chef was just a little shy with all the seasoning. The coconut shrimp had only a hint of coconut flavoring, and the same could be said for the coconut curry sauce. If I hadn????????????????????????????????t jotted notes before I ordered, I might not have noticed either flavor in the sauce. My meal came with baby Yukon gold potatoes roasted with herbs, and zucchini with marinara sauce. My husband ordered pan-seared ginger-crumbed sushi-grade tuna with teriyaki butter sauce ($20.99, but only $15.99 with the coupon). At that price it was quite a bargain. The tuna was incredibly fresh and melted in your mouth ???????????????????????????????? and it was cooked beautifully, but the presentation wasn????????????????????????????????t what he expected. He was hoping for some crunchy crumbs, but the abundance of sauce poured over the tuna made the crumbs soggy. The dish would have been greatly improved if the tuna were placed in a pool of sauce on the plate. One of our friends ordered the oysters Rockefeller appetizer ($10.99) off the specials page to start. The six oysters were nestled in a bed of rice pilaf and were very tasty, with distinct flavors of spinach, lemon and briny oysters. He followed that with a mighty impressive Cobb salad ($14.99) that consisted of a mound of lettuce topped with jumbo shrimp, a lobster claw, grilled chicken, bacon, hard-boiled egg and a wedge of Maytag blue cheese. Our other friend was very happy with the baked stuffed jumbo shrimp ($18.99), which consisted of four shrimp topped with a savory seafood stuffing. Even though we prefer bolder flavors, Clancy????????????????????????????????s delivered good food (and lots of it), a great atmosphere, and a gorgeous view. We????????????????????????????????d definitely go back.
