- Cape brewery uncaps potential Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, MA) - May 12, 2006 Author: STACEY MYERS HYANNIS - Barely a few months after moving into a new home, Cape Cod Beer's business has picked up enough that the microbrewery's owner has added a salesman and is accelerating expansion plans. ''We've added a staff member, we've quadrupled retail (sales) and doubled wholesale,'' owner/brewmaster Todd Marcus said in an interview Wednesday. ''My next step is to add more equipment. I already started by buying more kegs to handle the increased number of draft accounts.'' By next month, he said, he hopes to be installing more brewing tanks. Marcus attributes the fast-paced growth to the fact that the company is now operating from one location, a 3,000-square-foot facility at 1336 Phinney's Lane. Before the move, which was completed in early February, Cape Cod Beer made and sold its beer from the Hyport Brewing Co. on Main Street and handled other brewery duties at other locations. (The Hyport's owner sold the building last year.) ''We had a space on one side of town where I was washing the kegs; we had the brewery site; and my office was in my basement,'' Marcus said. Now, he said, ''we're operating more effectively.'' ''We can actually be brewing at the same time that we're washing and filling kegs,'' he said. Though, Marcus added, working from the Hyport for two years helped him find out how Cape Cod Beer would be received locally, without having to make a large investment in his own building. Shortly after opening the new site, Marcus hired full-time salesman Blake Decker as part of his plan to grow faster and operate more efficiently. Decker joins Marcus and Brian Flagg, who on the production side, as one of three full-time, paid staff members. Hiring a salesman will help with the wholesale business expansion by having someone dedicated to sales, said Marcus, who previously handled some of the sales on top of his other duties, which include delivering beer to customers. Now, they distribute beer to restaurants, bars and package stores on the Upper and Mid-Cape. Cape Cod Beer is on tap at 70 Cape restaurants, according to a company press release. Eventually, Marcus hopes to distribute beer on the Outer Cape and expand across the bridges. Since opening the new location, he said, they have doubled the number of restaurant and package store customers they serve. Retail business - which entails selling and filling 64-ounce ''growlers'' of beer - has also picked up, Marcus said. ''I never would have anticipated that off the bat we would have quadrupled,'' he said, adding that in one recent week they refilled about 300 growlers.
