- California State University, Stanislaus is widely known as the most beautiful and friendly of the California State University (CSU) campuses, blending modern facilities with the pastoral charm of the countryside. The University serves the state's northern Central Valley and with a total enrollment of 8,836, provides a small private school atmosphere at a public school price. The campus enjoys an ideal location in the heart of California's Central Valley, a short distance from the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey, Big Sur, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Yosemite National Park. The proximity allows for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, surfing and other outdoors sports and activities. Six colleges provide sixty-three undergraduate majors with business, liberal studies, nursing, psychology, social work, criminal justice, and biology the most popular. The music and art programs are also of a high caliber with successful graduates in every area of the arts. The average class size for undergraduates is 24 and the student/faculty ratio is 19 to 1. The campus has undergone dramatic physical and educational transformation with the new Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science, a $54 million state-of-the-art facility for the sciences and health programs. A Student Recreation Complex, complete with a modern exercise facility, new stadium and other sports amenities, will be completed in 2008 as will a new and vastly expanded bookstore. Diversity is strong at CSU Stanislaus where Hispanic students make up 28 percent of the student body, Asian/Pacific Islanders 11 percent, African Americans four percent, and international and Native American students one percent each. CSU Stanislaus boasts one of the highest retention rates among the 23 CSU campuses. Student success is facilitated by a dense network of on-campus resources that recognizes that much of the student body consists of first-generation college students. Consistent advising including a strong first year program, frequent and meaningful contact with professors, and supportive staff and administrators all help the cause. CSU Stanislaus boasts over 80 students clubs ranging from rock climbing to dance, along with ten national honor society chapters. There are also five fraternities and eight sororities. On-campus housing provides a safe and home-like atmosphere with a gated community, multiple dining options, laundry facilities, and computer labs. CSU Stanislaus disbursed more than $21.2 million in merit- and need-based grants and scholarships for the 2007-2008 school year. The scholarships range from full tuition, board and books through the President's Scholarship program to hundreds of other scholarships ranging from $100 to $5,000 per school year. Government agencies, hospitals and medical centers, banks, and school districts are among the top employers that recruit CSU Stanislaus students on campus at career fairs. The University also has a strong nursing program that has prepared over 900 students for the in-demand field. The Alumni Association was recently turned into an Alumni Council in which all alumni are members and benefit from networking, services and discounts, and social functions. Part of the school's high retention and student satisfaction rates are due to the emphasis placed on welcoming students to campus each year. Village Welcome Week offers a lively series of activities to greet residential students from day one. The next week brings Campus Welcome Week, which celebrates the arrival of all students with a full week of activities. Warrior Day and Homecoming are two major campus traditions. In the spring, Warrior Day brings a similarly celebratory mood to campus with food, fun, and live tunes. The University's art gallery, which opened with the school in 1965, gives students hands-on experience with contemporary art, exposure to other cultures, and opportunities for artistic advancement and leadership.
