- Mission
- Few schools the size of Austin College offer a greater emphasis on all things global, highlighted by a nationally recognized study abroad program. Three-quarters of the Class of 2009 studied abroad while attending Austin College, and an average 70 percent of students in the past 10 years have studied abroad, exploring more than 50 countries on 6 continents. In fact, Austin College has been ranked #1 in the nation 4 of the past 6 years by the Institute of International Education for percentage of study abroad participation among liberal arts colleges. Study abroad takes many forms at Austin College, including January Term, internship programs, and service opportunities such as the new Global Outreach summer program that has sent students on self-designed international service projects in Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam. In 2010 alone, Austin College students once again furthered their educations on nearly every continent, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. For January Term, students visited 25 countries on 5 continents-all except Australia and Antarctica. Austin College biology professor George Diggs covered the coldest continent with a January sabbatical trip to Antarctica, where his research involved capturing videos of penguins, leopard seals, and humpback whales, as well as photos of animals and a small tuft of grass he found on the Antarctic Peninsula.
