Mission
Anna Maria College (AMC), a private, comprehensive, four-year, coeducational Catholic college, was founded in 1946 by the Sisters of Saint Anne. It is located on a beautiful 180-acre campus in Paxton, Massachusetts just minutes from the bustling downtown of Worcester, MA with Boston, Providence, and Hartford only an hour away. Anna Maria College is a close-knit community. Small class sizes allow for mentor relationships to develop between faculty members and students. Freshman and sophomore classes generally have between 15 and 20 students; some upper-level classes have as few as 5 students. Faculty members teach and advise students based on their knowledge of each person as an individual, and classes are never taught by graduate assistants. Criminal justice is one of the more popular programs on campus, along with social work, fire science, education and psychology. AMC also offers special majors such as music, art therapy and sports management and has recently introduced an associate in nursing degree program. Fifth-year master's options are available in business administration (BBA/MBA), counseling psychology, criminal justice (BS/MA), education (BA/BS/MA/MS), emergency management (BS/MS), fire science (BS/MS), pastoral studies/counseling (BA/MA), and visual art. A five-year strategic plan calls for the College to change and enhance its core curriculum and extra curricular activities to ensure that students have access to the programs and services that will help them develop their mind, body and spirit so that they can become strong leaders in their communities. An honors program, developed in Fall of 2008 offers high-achieving and motivated students the opportunity to work closely with their professors and take part in study-abroad programs. New academic programs such as applied history, video game design and dance and dance therapy are currently being explored. Anna Maria College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Council on Social Work Education, and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and is approved by the Board of Registration in Nursing in Massachusetts. AMC is also approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Anna Maria College's NCAA Division III athletic program offers intercollegiate competition for men (baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, and soccer) and women (basketball, field hockey, soccer, softball, and volleyball). In the fall of 2008, AMC introduced men's and women's lacrosse and tennis teams, and in the fall of 2009 the College's first football team will take the field. Intramural athletics and the coed club sport of cheerleading are also available to students who do not wish to participate on varsity teams. Students enjoy a full social life both on campus and within the college-city atmosphere of nearby Worcester. Annual events enjoyed by all students include Winterfest, Harvest and Spring Weekends, President's Christmas Dinner, the 100 Days Party, Semi-Formal dinner/dance and a Senior Ball. Local attractions include big-name entertainment and minor league hockey at the DCU Center; art, history, and science museums; classical music performances at Mechanics Hall; off-Broadway shows at the Hanover Theatre; and day and night skiing at Wachusett Mountain.
