Mission
UNUSUAL COMBINATIONS. At Allegheny, we feel so strongly about unusual combinations that they are built right into our curriculum: We're one of the few liberal arts colleges nationally that will ask you to choose a minor as well as a major. Does this make school more difficult? In some ways it probably does. But we find that our students love the challenge. A nationally known residential college of liberal arts and sciences, Allegheny is a unique place where students embrace the College's total educational experience. Our 2,100 students have the uncanny ability to create unusual combinations of interests, skills, and talents. These "wonderfully weird" combinations enhance our students' success here and ensure excellence in their future careers. For example, Allegheny students might study political science as they prepare for medical school. They might take ballroom dancing, participate in varsity basketball, and conduct lab research???all in the same week. The classroom experience is enhanced by nationally recognized programs such as the Center for Political Participation, the Center for Experiential Learning, and the Center for Economic and Environmental Development, which offer students powerful and engaging out-of-classroom experiences. With more than 900 unique combinations of majors and minors, and a capstone comprehensive senior project, Allegheny students can explore all of their interests. Our undergraduate residential education prepares young adults for successful, meaningful lives by promoting students' intellectual, moral, and social development and encouraging personal and civic responsibility. Allegheny's faculty and staff combine high academic standards and a commitment to the exchange of knowledge with a supportive approach to learning. Students thrive in the unusual combinations culture, developing highly valued abilities to explore critical issues from multiple perspectives. Graduates are equipped to think critically and creatively, write clearly, speak persuasively, and meet challenges in a diverse, interconnected world. The nation's 32nd oldest college, Allegheny is known for its rich history, stunning campus, and professors who not only know students by name but also take pride in their students' success. Our students often work side by side with faculty on research and creative projects that are often reserved only for graduate students at other colleges and universities.
